How to Make the Most of a Short Trip

Coffee Is Your Friend

Part of the joy of travelling for me is that I can do whatever I want.  I’m not a morning person, so when I go on trips, I usually leave lots of time for sleeping in.  Not having to set an alarm is a luxury I choose to relish when I’m on holiday.  Fortunately, I have been lucky in that most of the trips I have taken have been more than long enough to allow for a leisurely pace.  On shorter trips, it’s a different story.  When you only have a week or two somewhere, you should save your sleeping for when you get home.  I feel that sleep is a waste of time when I’m trying to pack in as many experiences as I can.  Getting up early and getting a head start on the tourists will give you that much more time to check things off your list.

Tour Packages

One way to make sure you get to see the highlights of any place you are going to is to go with an organized tour.  People disagree on this issue as well.  Some would rather die than be ushered around and told where and when to go, while others see it as a great opportunity to make friends and an easy way to see the sights.  If you have limited time, it’s probably worth looking into, no matter what your opinion of tour packages is.  The pros might outweigh the cons.  The tour company will take care of transportation and accommodation, they don’t get lost and they speak the language.  In short, most, if not all, of the stress will be removed from your travels and you’ll be free to just enjoy it.  If you’re pressed for time, this is a major plus.  On the downside, it doesn’t leave much room for spontaneity, and having to stick to someone else’s schedule can be a pain in the butt sometimes, but it might be worth it.  For a more flexible option, many larger cities have hop-on hop-off bus tours that make transportation easy, but still allow you to be in control of where you go and how long you stay.

make it yours

While short holidays may seem like small potatoes compared to the life-changing epic travels that some people embark on, they are still something very special and amazing, so you want to make sure you give yourself every opportunity to make them special and amazing.  Don’t get so caught up in making sure you see everything that you forget to look around and enjoy the atmosphere.  And don’t get so caught up in enjoying the atmosphere that you forget to see the things you’ve been dying to see all your life.  Think of how you’d be kicking yourself if you flew all the way to Paris and forgot to see the Eiffel Tower!  But most importantly for any trip, no matter how long it lasts, do whatever you want to do.  You only have so much time to enjoy yourself, so don’t let anyone distract you from that mission.
