How to Stay in Shape While on the RoadBy Shanda Stefanson [Travel]

Let Your Trip Be Your WorkoutLots of times the rigours of travel will be a workout in themselves. Walking around with a giant backpack all day will burn plenty of calories. Plus there’s climbing 10 flights of stairs to your hotel room, hills to be hiked up, taxis to run for and the extra mileage you put in getting lost each day. If you don’t think that’s enough, take a biking holiday or an extreme sport holiday. Go rock climbing, kayaking, snorkelling, hiking, windsurfing or white water rafting. There are tons of options open to people who want to stay fit and travel at the same time. If that sort of trip doesn’t appeal to you, try thinking outside the box as far as what constitutes exercise. Take a class in a local type of dance or learn traditional wrestling. Spend the day picking oranges or grapes in an orchard or vineyard. You’ll make some great memories while you keep fit. Dietary Concerns Temptations in the form of food will plague you wherever you travel. As far as I’m concerned, a week or two of indulgence never hurt anyone. To those who don’t subscribe to this philosophy, making food choices is harder. No matter which way your tastes sway, I think it’s important to maintain a balance between healthy choices and holiday choices. You may never forgive yourself if you didn’t have a single cup of gelato in Italy or bite of cheese in France. It’s also important to make sure you get all the nutrients you need to fuel your travels. You’ll have much more energy for sightseeing if you eat somewhat healthy meals than if you stuff your face full of junk food. You’ll also get a more authentic food experience if you search out restaurants that serve fresh, healthy ingredients and local produce markets rather than falling into the failsafe habit of convenience store sandwiches and fast food. ________________________________________ it’s all about commitment Some are more committed to their healthy lifestyle than others. It’s important that you decide where you will compromise and what you need to stick to in order to feel healthy, happy and good about yourself. While it can be a challenge, you can still keep up your commitment to healthy living no matter where you go. All it takes is a little imagination, determination and a willingness to rise above the funny looks and stares you get for being the only one jogging down the cobbled city sidewalks or doing yoga in a crowded park. |
