What was Hemingway’s favourite pastime in Spain? What did he drink in Cuba? Jenny Ferguson points out the highlights of the writer’s wandering life. Ernest Hemingway, American writer, journalist and avid traveller, is one of history’s great literary figures. The best part about following Hemingway’s footsteps around the world is that your options are nearly endless. Here’s a quick rundown of places to see and things to do on the path of Ernest Hemingway.Paris, France Paris is a thriving, modern metropolis with flights coming in from just about everywhere in the world. You can spend a few days or a week there, or you can get lost forever in her streets. No matter where you go, Paris is overflowing with pieces of Hemingway’s past. He lived in Paris in the 1920s as a part of the expatriate community there. Visit one of many restaurants the great writer liked to frequent, including Lipp's in Saint-Germain, Harry's New York Bar and Closerie des Lilas. Pack A Moveable Feast to read on the plane (Hemingway compared Paris to “a moveable feast,” something that you could take with you for the rest of your life). Take in a Bullfight The Sun Also Rises is a great introduction to Hemingway as a writer and to his passion for bullfighting. As an avid bullfighting fan, he wrote about and attended many fights over the years in Spain. It’s a bloody sport and not for the faint of heart or for people who feel really strongly about animals, but Hemingway loved it. It had a deeper meaning for him. He saw it “as man’s ultimate challenge.” If you just can’t witness a bullfight, as I probably couldn’t, visit Pamplona. Find monuments dedicated to Hemingway and visit restaurants and hotels he frequented. This is a place he cared about and came back to again and again. |
