View From Venus: Love At First Sight

[View From Venus]
Are women more likely than men to fall for someone at first sight?  Sarah Stefanson shares her theory about the difference between the sexes on this issue.
You can tell when two people are falling in love in a movie because the music swells, the lighting softens and everything happens in slow motion for a moment.  In real life we don’t have any of these convenient clues, yet many people still insist that they have fallen in love with someone at first sight.  Could it possibly be love in an instant or is it most likely the result of a serious physical attraction?  Is there any truth to the concept of love at first sight?

This week in View From Venus I’ll approach that very question from a female point of view, while over in Message From Mars Matthew will tackle it using his male outlook.

Love vs. Lust

I think it’s probably more common for women to believe that they have fallen instantly in love with someone than it is for men.  I don’t have any statistics to back this up, but knowing the dynamics of female and male psyches as I do, I’m fairly confident that a woman is more likely to believe in love at first sight.

The factor that determines this theory is that men are better able to separate the concepts of love and sex.  When a man meets a woman who blows him away with her beauty, he attributes the crazy pull he feels to the fact that he wants to get in her pants.  Women, on the other hand, are not as in touch with their sexual selves in general, since they’re told that a sexual woman is a slutty woman.  Therefore, a woman is more likely to define a sudden attraction to a man as love at first sight rather than just a major carnal yearning.

Be Skeptical

I advise my female readers to be wary of a man who claims to have fallen instantly in love with you upon first glance.  This man is either going to be super dramatic, which indicates a stormy relationship to come, or he is a liar, a con artist or a player.  Men are practical about love.  When they love someone it usually comes after a long period of establishing trust.  Since it’s not traditional for a man to be seeking a committed relationship (at least not as much as it is expected from women), there’s a good chance that someone claiming to be in love right off the bat is going to end up messing with your emotions.
